How to Ship Trading Cards Safely: Packing Guide

If a card can move, bend or get wet inside the package, it is not ready to ship. The right method depends on the card, its value and its destination. A low-cost raw card sold on eBay may qualify for Standard Envelope. A valuable card or graded slab needs a tracked parcel. A card going to grading should be packed to the grader’s instructions, not like an ordinary buyer order.

Choose the shipping method before packing

How to ship a raw trading card safely

1. Inspect and sleeve the card

Photograph the front and back before packing. With clean, dry hands, slide the card into a correctly sized penny sleeve. Do not force a thick memorabilia card into a standard sleeve. A tight fit can catch a corner or press the surface.

2. Add the right holder

For a normal tracked order, a correctly sized toploader is a practical choice. A magnetic one-touch holder can work for thicker cards when its point size matches the card. Put the protected holder in a team bag. If you use painter’s tape, place a small folded pull tab on the outside of the holder or bag. Never stick tape to the card, the penny sleeve or across an exposed sleeve opening.

For a PSA submission, follow PSA’s current method instead: place the card in a clear penny sleeve and then a semi-rigid holder. For standard trading cards, PSA specifies a 3 5/16 by 4 7/8 inch semi-rigid holder and says not to use toploaders, tape, pull tabs or sticky notes in the submission holder. Check PSA’s current shipping guide before mailing because submission requirements can change.

3. Stop bending without adding dangerous pressure

For tracked parcels, place the protected card between two clean pieces of cardboard that are slightly larger than the holder. Secure the support with painter’s tape around the cardboard, not against the card. The sandwich should hold the card in place without bowing it. Over-tight rubber bands and tape can create the pressure you are trying to prevent.

4. Add a clean moisture barrier

Close the holder inside a team bag or clean resealable bag. This keeps loose tape and minor moisture away from the holder. A second pack of team bags is useful if you ship several cards together.

5. Use a mailer or box that fits the service

A tracked bubble mailer works for many properly supported raw cards. Use a sturdy box for valuable cards, thick holders, graded slabs or orders that need more crush protection. Fill empty space so the contents do not rattle, but do not pack so tightly that the holder bends.

6. Weigh, measure and document

Measure the finished package, weigh it and buy the correct label. A Do Not Bend label or Fragile label is only a request to the carrier, not a substitute for rigid support. Keep photos of the card, the packing stages and the sealed parcel. Save the receipt and share tracking when the service provides it.

Current eBay Standard Envelope limits

As checked on August 25, 2026, eBay’s official Standard Envelope page allows eligible envelopes up to 3 ounces. The service is for eligible U.S. marketplace shipments and uses USPS. The envelope must be between 3.5 by 5 inches and 6.125 by 11.5 inches, less than 0.25 inch thick, uniform and flexible. It may contain up to 24 raw trading cards or no more than two cards in top loaders. Graded cards are not eligible.

eBay Standard Envelope is for eligible low-value listings. eBay currently presents the service for eligible items up to $20, with up to $20 of shipping protection on single-item orders and up to $50 on combined orders. Eligibility also depends on the listing category, so confirm that the service is offered for the order before packing. A rigid, lumpy or over-thick envelope may be returned or arrive with postage due.

Important: Ordinary stamped mail and eBay Standard Envelope are not interchangeable. Do not assume that adding a non-machinable stamp creates eBay tracking or shipment protection.

How to ship graded cards

1. Photograph the slab and certification number before packing.
2. Place the slab in a resealable slab sleeve or clean bag to protect it from scuffs.
3. Wrap it with bubble wrap, paying attention to the corners and label end.
4. Use a sturdy box or protective tracked parcel with no empty movement.
5. Choose insurance and signature confirmation according to the card’s value, marketplace rules and your risk tolerance.

How to pack several cards

Keep the stack square and distribute pressure evenly. Sleeve every card that could rub against another. Group sleeved cards inside team bags, then add rigid support sized to the group. Avoid a tall stack inside one top loader and never force cards into a holder. For a large set or deck, use a fitted card box inside a shipping box with void fill. The same method applies to sports cards, Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering cards.

Packing mistakes that cause damage

• Tape touching the sleeve or card: adhesive can catch an edge or leave residue.
• Loose contents: a protected card can still chip or crack its holder if it slides around.
• Too much pressure: tight rubber bands and overfilled mailers can bow cards.
• Wrong holder size: a thick card squeezed into a standard holder can be damaged before it leaves.
• Guessing postage: incorrect weight, dimensions or rigidity can cause returns, surcharges and delays.
• Relying on a warning label: the package itself must survive normal handling.

• Photograph the card’s condition.

• Keep all adhesive away from the card and sleeve opening.
