MTG Spider-Man vs Avatar: Sets, Products and Prices

Updated August 16, 2026. Both 2025 releases are now available. This guide replaces the original preview with confirmed products, formats, mechanics and collector treatments.

Correction: The earlier article predicted an Avatar Commander deck, low-print Spider-Man editions, serialized chase cards and price spikes. Wizards did not announce those claims for these releases. Avatar had a Commander’s Bundle, which is a bundle of boosters and accessories, not a ready-to-play Commander deck.

Magic: The Gathering’s 2025 crossover calendar paired two familiar worlds with very different sets. Marvel’s Spider-Man is a tighter superhero set built around Spider-Heroes, villains and web-slinging. Avatar: The Last Airbender is a broader journey through the animated series, with all four elements, a Beginner Box and Jumpstart support.

What Universes Beyond means here

Universes Beyond brings outside franchises into Magic using normal Magic rules. The branding does not tell you format legality by itself. Check the set code printed on the card.

For Spider-Man, SPM cards entered Standard and are also permitted in Pioneer, Modern and Commander. SPE and MAR cards are Commander, Legacy and Vintage legal, while individual reprints remain legal in formats where the underlying card is already allowed. Avatar follows the same split: TLA is the main all-formats release, while TLE is the Eternal-only group. Bans can change, so confirm current rules before an event.

Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man

Spider-Man released worldwide on September 26, 2025. Peter Parker, Miles Morales, Venom and other recognizable characters made the final set, but the useful update is how the cards play and where they can be found, not that they were once “expected” to appear.

Web-slinging in plain language

Web-slinging offers an alternate casting cost. You can pay that cost if you return a tapped creature you control to its owner’s hand. It captures the rhythm of a hero swinging out of danger and another threat entering the action. Returning a creature can also let you reuse an enter-the-battlefield ability, but it costs board presence, so it is not automatically a discount.

Spider-Man collector treatments

Wizards’ official collecting guide documents borderless source-material cards that use artwork from Marvel comics. Nonfoil versions could appear in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters, while traditional foil versions were limited to Collector Boosters. The product line also included Scene Boxes and multiple booster treatments.

The original article told readers to expect serialized cards and low-print special editions. Those were not supported by Wizards’ product guide. A premium treatment can be harder to open than a base card without being serialized or having a published print run.

Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender

Avatar: The Last Airbender released worldwide on November 21, 2025. The final set includes Aang, Katara, Toph, Zuko, Iroh and characters from across the series. Wizards supported new players with a Beginner Box and Jumpstart Boosters, while collectors received borderless treatments, scene cards and premium foils.

How bending became Magic mechanics

Firebending generates red mana when a creature with the ability attacks, and that mana lasts through the combat. The set also represents the other elements through its mechanics and card designs. The flavor is not simply “red equals fire and blue equals water.” Card color, costs and abilities still follow Magic’s rules, and several characters appear in more than one context.

Wizards’ official mechanics guide is the right source for exact rules. It also covers returning elements such as Clue tokens and Shrines.

Avatar collector treatments and products

The raised-foil borderless Avatar Aang was an English-only Collector Booster treatment. Collector Boosters also held textless neon-ink foil battle-pose cards. Play and Collector Boosters contained scene cards recreating the three book finales, while two standalone Scene Boxes built six-card scenes.

There was no ready-to-play Avatar Commander deck in the official release lineup. The Commander’s Bundle contained nine Play Boosters, one Collector Booster, full-art lands and Commander-focused extras. It was raw material for building decks, not a 100-card preconstructed deck.

Which set is better for you?

• Choose Spider-Man if your priority is Marvel comic art, Spider-Heroes or the web-slinging mechanic.
• Choose Avatar if you want a guided entry point, elemental gameplay or scenes spanning the full animated story.
• Buy singles if you want one character or treatment. Opening sealed product is not a reliable way to obtain one specific card.
• Compare set codes if format legality matters. A similarly themed card can have different legality based on its code.
• Use MSRP as history, not a current quote. Local and secondary-market prices change with supply, condition and region.

1. Decide whether you want cards to play, a sealed product, a character collection or a display treatment.
2. Check the printed set code and current format legality.

5. Inspect condition and seller history, especially for Collector Booster pulls.
6. Set a budget and compare singles with the expected cost of opening packs.
